Thanks for visiting. My name is Thomas Hale. I am a film director, photographer and journalist.
Think of TEN THOUSAND AND ONE STORIES as an intimate downtown gallery with a movie theater, library, and photo space.
That gallery just happens to be online and not downtown.
10001 is also a Zip Code in Manhattan.
The latest collection on the site is my documentary film series, MAKERS. It is an homage to craftspeople using materials and techniques handed down through the centuries. As Robert Assie, a stone carver in the series, says, “if I showed up at the Egyptian pyramids worksite with my mallet and chisel, they would recognize what I am and put me to work.”
The early exhibits on the site were primarily my landscape/travel photography, organized into collections: NEW YORK ON FOOT, TRAVELS IN INDIA, LONDON ON FOOT and PASSAGES. Back in the 1900’s, while studying European history at the U of S, I took a break to live in Paris–and to immerse myself in art, cinema and literature. I spent many days looking at paintings in the Louvre, Le Grand Palais and the Jeu de Paume. Those paintings taught me photography and cinematography, and gave me the lifelong habit of exploring the world en plein air with a camera and a notebook.
Enjoy the gallery, and if you do, please share.
